Lincoln City vs. Newport: Where Should You Stay on the Oregon Coast?

Nikki Cleveland

Planning an Oregon Coast trip often leads to one deceptively difficult question: Lincoln City or Newport?

The two coastal towns are only about 25 miles apart, but they offer noticeably different vacations. Newport has major attractions, a working bayfront, and plenty to explore. Lincoln City offers miles of beach, easy access to the sand, glass floats to hunt for, shopping, restaurants, and a laid-back home base that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy the coast.

So, is it better to stay in Lincoln City or Newport?

For travelers who want attractions and a busier sightseeing itinerary, Newport has a slight edge. For those who want the beach to be the main event—and still have plenty to do nearby—Lincoln City is hard to beat.

Here’s how the two compare.

Lincoln City vs. Newport at a Glance

Choose Lincoln City if: the goal is an easy beach vacation, ocean views, long walks on the sand, shopping, casual exploring, or a central home base for day trips.

Choose Newport if: the trip revolves around attractions like the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Yaquina Head, the historic bayfront, or Newport’s working harbor.

The good news? They’re close enough that staying in one doesn’t mean missing the other.

And that may be the best argument for choosing Lincoln City as a home base.

Which has better beaches: Lincoln City or Newport?

Both cities have excellent beaches, but the experience is different.

Lincoln City has roughly seven miles of coastline, giving visitors plenty of room for beach walks, kite flying, beachcombing, sunset watching, and hunting for the city’s famous Finders Keepers glass floats.

There are numerous beach access points around town, so getting onto the sand is relatively easy from many parts of Lincoln City.

Newport also has beautiful beaches, including Nye Beach and Agate Beach. But Newport’s appeal tends to be spread across several different experiences—the bayfront, aquarium, lighthouses, beaches, restaurants, and harbor.

In Lincoln City, the beach feels more like the center of the trip.

Which town has more things to do?

This one depends entirely on what counts as “things to do.”

Newport has some of the Oregon Coast’s best-known attractions. The Oregon Coast Aquarium alone makes it a popular choice for families, and visitors can also explore Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, Yaquina Bay, the historic bayfront, and local marine attractions.

If the goal is to wake up with a sightseeing checklist, Newport makes a strong case.

Lincoln City is less about moving from attraction to attraction.

Instead, a typical day might involve walking the beach in the morning, looking for a hidden glass float, grabbing lunch, exploring local shops, heading to the Lincoln City Outlets, visiting the Chinook Winds Casino, hiking nearby, or simply returning to the beach.

Both Lincoln City and Newport also put visitors within easy reach of Depoe Bay, the whale watching capital of Oregon.

Which is better for families?

Families can have a great trip in either city.

Newport’s biggest advantage is obvious: the Oregon Coast Aquarium. For families with kids who are fascinated by sharks, sea otters, seals, and marine life, it can easily become the centerpiece of the trip. Newport is also home to Ripley’s Believe it Or Not, a fun stop for all ages.

Lincoln City, however, works especially well for families who don’t want every day scheduled.

The beach provides built-in entertainment. Kids can hunt for treasures, build sandcastles, fly kites, explore the shoreline, and burn an impressive amount of energy without having to spend a ton of money on admission tickets.

Which is better for couples?

For a couples’ getaway, Lincoln City gets the edge—especially when the goal is to spend more time looking at the ocean than looking at an itinerary.

An oceanfront stay makes it possible to walk the beach, watch the sunset, head out for dinner, and come back to the water without turning the day into an expedition.

Newport can be a great couples’ destination too, particularly for travelers interested in restaurants, breweries, the bayfront, and sightseeing.

But for the classic “we’re going to the coast and doing as little as possible” trip, Lincoln City understands the assignment.

Lincoln City vs. Newport for restaurants

There is no tragic choice here. Nobody needs to survive on granola bars.

Newport’s working waterfront gives the city a strong seafood identity, and the bayfront has restaurants mixed among shops, docks, and fishing boats. It’s a great choice for travelers who enjoy making food and drink part of their sightseeing. There are also plenty of restaurants in Nye Beach, as well as throughout town.

Lincoln City also has a broad restaurant scene, from seafood and casual coastal favorites to breakfast spots, breweries, coffee shops, and date-night options.

Again, for this aspect of your trip, you can’t go wrong with either town. Whether you’re enjoying seafood at Kyllo’s just next door to D Sands, with beautiful oceanfront views, or you’re grabbing breakfast at The Coffee House on the bayfront in Newport, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from no matter where you stay.

Which is better for shopping?

Lincoln City wins this category.

The Lincoln City Outlets are a major draw for visitors who want a break from the beach, particularly on rainy days. The city also has local shops, galleries, bookstores, antique stores, and plenty of places to browse.

Newport has enjoyable shopping as well, particularly around Nye Beach and the historic bayfront, where shops are part of the overall sightseeing experience.

But if shopping is high on the vacation priority list, Lincoln City offers more reason to leave extra room in the trunk.

Which is better when it rains?

This is the Oregon Coast. Eventually, this question becomes relevant.

Newport has dedicated indoor attractions thanks to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and other sightseeing options. Lincoln City counters with shopping, restaurants, the outlets, Chinook Winds Casino, galleries, and the underrated vacation activity of watching terrible weather from somewhere warm.

And when staying directly on the ocean, a stormy day doesn’t necessarily ruin the view. Sometimes it improves it.

Both towns are equally comfortable when it rains. It just depends on what you plan on doing when the weather turns gray.

Which town is more walkable?

Neither Lincoln City nor Newport should be approached like a compact downtown where the car can be abandoned for an entire vacation.

Both are spread out.

Newport does have pockets that are pleasant to explore on foot, particularly the historic bayfront and Nye Beach.

Lincoln City stretches for several miles along Highway 101, so visitors will generally drive between different restaurants, shops, attractions, and neighborhoods.

However, where a traveler stays matters.

Choosing an oceanfront property with direct or nearby beach access, like D Sands Rentals, can make the most important part of a Lincoln City vacation accessible without getting in the car at all.

Which is better for day trips?

Stay in Lincoln City and Newport is still close enough for a straightforward day trip. Head south and visitors can explore Depoe Bay, Otter Rock, Yaquina Head, Newport, and other Central Coast stops before returning to Lincoln City.

Head north instead and destinations like Neskowin and Pacific City become possibilities.

That means visitors don’t necessarily need to choose between the two towns. Visit both.

Visit Newport for the aquarium, bayfront, lighthouse, or lunch. Then head back up the coast for an evening on the beach.

Is Lincoln City cheaper than Newport?

Accommodation prices in both cities change significantly depending on the season, day of the week, location, room type, and how early the trip is booked.

Instead of choosing based solely on the nightly rate, compare what comes with the stay.

An oceanfront location, beach access, kitchen facilities, parking, and enough space for the whole group can change the actual cost—and experience—of a coastal trip.

This is especially worth considering for multi-night stays, when being able to make breakfast or a simple meal can be considerably more appealing than finding a restaurant three times a day.

So, is it better to stay in Lincoln City or Newport?

Here’s the simplest answer.

Stay in Newport if the attractions are the vacation.

If the Oregon Coast Aquarium, historic bayfront, Yaquina Head, and a sightseeing-heavy itinerary are the main reasons for the trip, staying in Newport makes sense.

Stay in Lincoln City if the coast itself is the vacation.

Lincoln City is a strong choice for travelers who picture their Oregon Coast getaway involving ocean views, spontaneous beach walks, sunsets, shopping, good food, and enough nearby attractions to prevent anyone from getting bored.

Plus, it works particularly well for visitors who want to explore more than one Central Oregon Coast town. Newport is still close enough to visit.

Make Lincoln City your home base

One of the advantages of staying in Lincoln City is not having to choose between a relaxing beach vacation and exploring the Central Oregon Coast.

At D Sands Rentals, you’re right on the ocean in the heart of Lincoln City, making it easy to start the morning at the beach, spend the day exploring Newport and the surrounding coast, and return in time to watch the sun disappear into the Pacific. Because an Oregon Coast itinerary should probably include some time when absolutely nothing is on the itinerary.
